#WWDC2014: Apple introduces Dr Dre to the world
NEW
DELHI: Days after announcing the acquisition of subscription streaming
music service Beats Music and Beats Electronics, and Beats co-founders
Jimmy Iovine and Dr Dre joining Apple, the Cupertino giant introduced Dr
Dre to a gathering of developers and media at its WWDC 2014 event.
Apple software chief Craig Federighi demonstrated OS X Yosemite's
Continuity feature by calling Apple's newest employee, Dr Dre through a
Mac. Dre said that he was excited about his new stint at Apple and even
asked him what time he needs to step in to beat Apple CEO Tim Cook, in
jest.
The Continuity feature, part of iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite,
makes switching between iOS and Mac devices more seamless for consumers
who use both platforms. iPhone owners can answer phone calls on their
Mac, dial a number through the Contacts, Messaging or Safari apps on
their desktop or even send SMS messages via their connected phone.
Apple had acquired Beats Music and Beats Electronics for a total of $3
billion, consisting of a purchase price of approximately $2.6 billion
and approximately $400 million that will vest over time. Apple CEO Tim
Cook tweeted the following picture on May 29th.
The deal is subject to regulatory approvals, and Apple expects the
transaction to close in fiscal Q4. It's more likely that the reason for
Apple's interest in Beats is the company's subscription-based music
streaming service which is challenging Apple's iTunes Music downloads
service.
