Hackers fleece retd armyman, woman of Rs 2.50 lakh

CHANDIGARH: Online hackers have cheated a retired army colonel from Ludhiana and a Chandigarh resident of Rs 2.50 lakh after communicating with them through the hacked email ID of their common friend Brig (retd) Sukhdev Singh of Sector 33.

Having received an email saying that Sukhdev was in London for the treatment of his cousin and in dire need of money, Col (retd) B S Gill and a woman (name withheld on request), who resides in Sector 10 here, deposited foreign currency worth Rs 1.50 lakh and Rs 1 lakh, respectively, in different accounts of the hackers.

Though the incident took place in July 2013, the cyber cell lodged an FIR on Thursday after a thorough investigation was done.

Sources in the cyber cell informed that, in their first email to Gill, the hackers asked for 1850 pounds, equivalent to Rs 1 lakh, for the treatment of Sukhdev's cousin. In their second email, they demanded more money for the patient's medicine.

In his complaint to the police, Sukhdev stated, "Gill and the woman came to know about the reality when they received a message from my new email id informing all my friends that I have opened a new account as my last email id had been hacked."

Sources in the police said that Sukhdev and Gill had served together in the Indian army and were in touch over email. Father of the woman was also in the army and Sukhdev's good friend. The complainant has attached receipts of deposits along with the complaint. A case has been registered at Sector 34 police station.
