Bill Gates, Tim Cook, Jeff Bezos pour ice water on their heads
NEW DELHI: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos have joined the list of tech executives spreading awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease — by dumping a bucket of ice cold water on themselves.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has gone viral with people posting videos online of dumping a bucket of ice water over their heads. Once soaked with cold water, they extend the challenge to others and ask them to either do the same or make a donation to an organization dedicated to fighting ALS.
Gates had been dared by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to partake in the challenge or donate $100 to ALS Foundation. He then challenged Tesla CEO Elon Musk, TED Conference's Chris Anderson and American Idol's Ryan Seacrest.
Cook, who had been challenged by Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller's challenge, was doused by ice cold water by American musician Michael Franti. The Apple CEO then dared Disney CEO Bob Iger, hip hop artist and new Apple recruit Dr Dre and Franti himself. Franti then completed the task at the spot, with Cook pouring a bucket of water on him.
Bezos took time out at Amazon's all-hands meeting to participate in the challenge. He dared Star Trek alumnus William Shatner, Patrick Stewart and George Takei to partake in the task or donate $100 each to ALS Foundation.
These tech titans are following the lead of Satya Nadella, Zuckerberg, Schiller as well as a string of Hollywood celebrities in spreading awareness about ALS.
